In reply to Annette. If a player calls trump and wants to play alone he does not get the dummy. A defender can also declare alone. In this case the other defender lays his cards face down and does not play the hand. If the defender takes 3 or 4 tricks, both defenders get two points each. If the defender takes 5 tricks both defenders get 4 points each. Keep in mind rules can be adjusted to “house” rules anyway the players agree upon.

In reply to Rob McEvoy. You can go alone. When you go alone you don't get to use the dummy hand at all and get 4 points for winning all five tricks rather than 2.

To be true to it's name, 'cutthroat', where I grew up (Sydney, Australia), only the defender who takes the first 2 tricks takes the 2 points which sets all 3 players against each other. It doesn't make sense that they both get 2 points. Also we score first to 11 and use the 5 and 6 cards to keep track of the score. Never used a dummy hand!

To me, having a dummy hand makes no sense. If you’re playing with 4 players and you go alone, you don’t get your partner’s cards to look through and pick out the best ones. Why would it be different if you don’t have a partner since he/she can’t help you anyway? And no, I’m not a beginner. I’ve been playing euchre for over 50 years.

Play with only three suits not four — so no blending of hand. Two left bowers — if both played in same hand — then first played wins over the other.
